Paul started in the Martial Arts in 1973 in London, training in Shotokan Karate under James Ashmore at North East London Poly (now East London University) in Stratford. He took his Dan grade in 1977 under Sensei Keinosuke Enoeda (1935-2003) the Shotokan Tiger’ (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keinosuke_Enoeda). He continued to train for many years with Dave Hazard (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dave_Hazard) and graded to 4th Dan in 1987. He started Aikido in 1980, under Brian Elgood and Gordon Murray at the old Myo Do Kan dojo at the Mid Sussex Judo Club in Kemp Town, Brighton. In 1991 he had to make a choice about the direction he was going and decided to dedicate himself to Aikido. He started competing mainly in kata partnership with Brian in the ’90s. Both were very successful nationally and had some international success. Paul was Joint Squad Manager with Brian for the Osaka competition, then was Squad Manager himself for the 2003 Leeds event. In 2005, he partnered with Chris Stamate as joint Squad Manager for the BAA Shodokan Squad at the Tokyo International Tournament. He was Chair of the Shodokan Division of the BAA. Paul has been an international referee at two major tournaments in Japan, most recently in Kyoto 2009, where he also competed with other club members. Paul is a certified BAA/BAB Coach. He is a member of the BAA Technical Committee.
